At the beginning of the month, Mr. Liner announced QAE's year-long theme ~ Mistakes Are Welcome Here! Each month, we will explore a character trait tied to our theme. For the month of October, we looked for BRAVE everywhere we could find it! Mr. Liner shared with us that they found brave in Dr. Seuss' book, "The Lorax", when the Lorax said, "I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues." Speaking up for someone who has no voice is important. If we do not do this, we risk losing something important. They challenged us to pay attention to bravery for the month, noticing it when we see it. We noticed that we choose to do something brave almost everyday! Bravery can be something small, like raising your hand to ask a question or something big like standing up for a friend or yourself. We spent the month finding examples of characters being brave in some books we have already read together, as well as some new ones.
During a class meeting we went around the circle and said something that we felt brave for:
Amelia: Coming to Kindergarten Asher: Watching the Minnion movie Lucas: Coming to kindergarten Audrey: Writing words Charlize: Falling down and breaking my tooth Dante: Going to a grown-up that I didn't know Emme: Going under water Jasper: Coming to kindergarten Samantha: Sleeping on my floor Serena: Coming to kindergarten Tatum: Going in the deep end William: Getting hurt nad not crying Morgan: 1st day of Kindergarten | Leo: Coming to kindergarten Liam: Coming to kindergarten Masai: Going on the ferris wheel Merrick: The first day of kindergarten Nilah: Going in the deep end with my sister Noelle: Coming to kindergarten Rex: Watching a scary movie Romie: Coming to Kindergarten Soren: Going to the cabin with bears Thea: Watching the stage in Jamaica Titus: Coming to Kindergarten Truman: Coming to Kindergarten |
Every class meeting, we always have a "safe" phrase/compliment so that all students can participate and no one can pass on their turn. As you may have guessed, "coming to kindergarten" was our safe phrase for being brave because every single one of us was really brave for doing that!
