Here at QAE, the act of mindfulness has been a big topic of conversation. Many teachers are personally interested in mindfulness and our very own Julietta Skoog has been practicing and sharing with our community for a few years now with "Mindful mornings" on Tuesdays in the gym. This year, we have been incorporating more acts of mindfulness into our everyday classroom routine. We started off by introducing how we take a deep breath and how we can focus in on our breath during times that might be overwhelming or when we notice our body is out of control. We take a deep breath in through our nose and sometimes out our nose or mouth. We have added a #5 to our 4 pt check line, "DEEP BREATH" before we walk out the door. In addition to breathing, we take an afternoon yoga break almost every day. We have been reading some great books about yoga/mindfulness and Mr. R has even been teaching us some animal yoga poses in PE. During our yoga break, we begin in a pose and then when we hear the bell sound, we come out of the pose, and then someone else tells us the next pose. Students are encouraged to find a spot around the room where they can practice their yoga. During the poses we try to freeze our bodies, have our voices off, and think about our breathing. In corpse pose, we might even say the words "in" "out" as we breathe with our eyes closed. As your student what poses they can show you! Later this year, the K team and the 4th grade team will be piloting a mindfulness curriculum in out classrooms called, Mind Up. We will be intentionally teaching lessons around getting focused and the core practice of pausing, listening, and breathing. We will also be practicing mindful listening, seeing, smelling, tasting, and moving. I can't wait!!! |
