Have a great Holiday! This time of year is always hectic and full of activities. When the craziness sets in, I try and remind myself to be present. To cherish the time I have with my loved ones and take the much needed time to re-center myself. I hope you all have a wonderful, healthy holiday! Rene Reminders for the week:**Bring back those book bags that were given out at conferences! If you return them on Monday, your students will put new books in for the week :) *** I have added some resources to the "curriculum tab" with lots of materials/things we use at school that can also be used at home! Please check it out if you are looking for ways support your students learning at home. - Our next field trip is fast approaching. We will be heading to the Gates Foundation Visitor center on Dec. 15th! More info and opportunities to chaperone will be available shortly. - Raize for Maize Campaign starting Dec 7th! Learn more below | Once again, Queen Anne Elementary is joining in the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week. Last year, 15 million students tried computer science in one week. This year, we're joining students worldwide to reach 100 million students! We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science, and fewer students are studying it than a decade ago. Our Hour of Code aligns directly with Queen Anne Elementary commitment to 21st century learning. Kindergarteners will be doing the hour of code TUESDAY, Dec. 8th in the afternoon! Annual Raise for Maize Campaign is coming soon
We have a PARTNER SCHOOL! Dwankhozi Primary school is located in rural Zambia and has become a big part of our school culture. We will be holding a whole school event known as "Dwankhozi Week" in the Spring and our classroom will start didivng into learning about this school during our next project, "How can we use our creativity to help?" As a part of this relationship, we have been committed to helping this community during Zambia's hungry season. In rural southern Africa, subsistence farmers experience a Hungry Season (January-March) when their stored food grown is depleted as they wait for the rainy season to end and the March harvest to be ready. That means their children are coming to school hungry, which makes learning very difficult for them. The school day has to be shortened during this period as the students have no energy to learn. About half of the students don't make it to school as their focus is on finding food. They told us that some women in the Dwankhozi Primary School community are willing to make the students a school lunch during this Hungry Season. They just need us to help buy some maize. Then they invited us to participate in a Raise for Maize Campaign that will start on Monday. They encouraged students to ask friends and family if they could do chores, or service projects, for a Raise for Maize donation.. They suggested things like raking leaves or cleaning extra parts of the house or caring for a pet. Dwankhozi is a community of people who care deeply about their school and want to help. When the students are provided with a nutritious meal during the school day for the duration of this tough season, school attendance remains high and the students’ and teachers' momentum for learning is sustained. $10 feeds 60 students for one day. $50 feeds 300 students for one day. $100 feeds the entire school for one day. They only need to be fed for 6 weeks (30 school days.) That's $3,000. ~ which is our fundraising goal. To keep 600 students learning! This Raise for Maize campaign will be help the week of Dec 7th-Dec 11th! A kick-off assembly will be happening at MMM on the 7th! We will collect funds until the end of December and send them off to Zambia the first week in January. | This flyer can be handed out to anyone interested in learning more about Raise for Maize.
