Now that our stories are easy for us to read, how can we make our stories more FUN to read! Our next writing unit is tackling just that. We will be using "flaps" to help us add more words to our pages without having to rewrite the whole thing or add a whole other page with another picture. We will be using purple pens on revision day to help us add punctuation, details in our pictures, and more exciting storyteller words. Our writing is going to have to get a little messy with revisions before we finally "publish" our finished piece. We will be wrapping up this unit with a LITERACY CELEBRATION where we invite you to come into class and hear this published piece we have been working so hard on (More information about date and time will be coming later).
Things that make our writing more FUN to read!
Amazing story beginnings! - The lead into a story is really important, it's what captures our readers attention. Using exact details about what you are seeing, hearing, or feelings can draw a reader in. Starting off your story with a question can spark a reader to keep reading. Adding more ACTION words! - Instead of writing, "I went to the swings" tell me HOW you went to the swings. Did you run, skip, crawl? Writing powerful endings! - End your piece with feeling. Writers can tell us how they were feeling, not just what they did last. Does the book end with you feeling frustrated, excited, sad, exhausted? Tell us this through your actions and what you said. You don't need to write "I was frustrated" if you can show us you were frustrated by saying, "it just kept happening over, and over, and over again...." | Transition words! - Keep the excitement of the story going from page to page with new and fun words like; suddenly, at last, after a while, finally, ect. Adding DESCRIPTIVE words! - Use your senses! What was it really like to be there. What were you seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling? Did you tell us what people were talking about? Did you mention how you were thinking? All of these things make your story come alive for your reader. Making pieces beautiful and ready for publication! - Many kindergarteners ideas of beautification involve excessive amounts of rainbows, stars, and unrelated decorations. How can we make it enhance our writing with color that is meaningful? How can we re-write or re-draw our picture to make our story more clear? |
