We finished up our true story unit! Each student chose 1 piece of writing from their writing folder that they wanted to fancy up and publish. All students then met with their learning partner to share their stories. While partner 1 was sharing, partner 2 was hard at work checking off whether or not their partner had added all the elements of a great true story. After sharing, partner 1 had the chance to go back and prove to partner 2 where the different elements could be found in their writing. This collaborative assessment was a great tool for both partners to be thinking about these elements of a true story and looking in their writing for evidence that they included them. Each student has documented their published piece with photos on their ipad as well as their checklist that goes with it as evidence of their learning. Their final step will be to meet with me and have a final conference about their piece. I will be hanging onto these pieces and giving them to you at your November conference. Our next writing unit is all about OPINION writing! |

Before we "publish" our first narrative story, we will be using this checklist to see if we have shared our story just like a storyteller would. We will be going into narrative in more depth after this first published piece is complete, but this is a good opportunity for students to reflect on their writing and see how they can make it even better!
We sent home our first stack of Kindergarten writing! I hope you got the chance to celebrate your young writer and learn something new from their teaching books. You may not be able to see a lot on each page, but there is a story behind evey, [icture, label, and self-stretched out word. During this stage of writing, some kids are using all they know about letter sounds to try and stretch out words. Some kids aren't ready for this yet, and that is OKAY! The more we write and share our ideas with the world, the more ready we will be take that big risk!
Writers need an AUDIENCE! They need to know that when we write, we write to share our ideas with the world. Our 2nd grade reading buddies are going to be one of the audiences we have to share our published pieces of work with. On Friday, we had a little popcorn celebration party with our buddies to celebrate our first published piece! We read the piece to them and they asked us questions about it.
Writing teaching books The first unit in the Writers' Workshop curriculum is all about students teaching people what they know. I can't explain to you how absolutely magical kindergarten writing is. Students feel empowered to share all the amazing things they know with the world. It is true expression at its finest. I LOVE watching you students write :)
Modeling writing for studentsI am constantly modeling the writing process with the class. I am writing pieces in front of them as well as having them help me build on my piece. I wanted to model teaching people about our school playground. I went through the process of really picturing the playground in my mind and then taking that picture and trying to draw it.
As a part of our Peter Reynolds study this week, we read Ish.In this story a child's artistic ability is transformed when they start seeing their work as vase-ish, flower-ish, ect. Their drawings may not look EXACTLY like what a vase or a flower would look like in real life, but they get the point across. I modeled this idea when I drew my picture of the carpet-ish and getting in the line-ish. We also looked at the book, "there is a bird on my head" by Mo Willems to get ideas for how to add movement to our pictures. We noticed that Mo Willems uses lines to show where things have been and where they are going. |
