We are at that point in the year where we are know using all the tools we have learned to really READ! We know the sounds that the letters make and we know how to push together a consonant and any short vowel to make a slide. We also know how to take a slide and add a consonant to make a word! Here are a few examples!
ba (this slide makes the "bah" sound like a sheep)
ba d (we would read this word by saying the slide then rolling the /d/ sound at the end "ba-d" then "bad")
pe (this slide has the short e which makes the the /e/ sound like in elephant)
pe n (we would read this word by saying the slide then rolling the /n/ sound at the end "pe-n" then "pen")
mo (this slide has the short o which makes the the /o/ sound like in octopus)
mo p (we would read this word by saying the slide then rolling the /p/ sound at the end "mo-p" then "mop")
tu (this slide has the short u which makes the the /u/ sound like in umbrella)
tu b (we would read this word by saying the slide then rolling the /b/ sound at the end "tu-b" then "tub")
In addition to reading books at home, these type of building word activities are GREAT to do. You can make countless words with these vowel sounds. This will help re-enforce their decoding skills and boost their confidence as a reader. Use a whiteboard or pencil and paper!
Are you using reading horizons at home? If not, this is what students are practicing on this program! it's really great stuff. If you are using a desktop computer, follow this link to access http://queenanne.rhdiscovery.com If you are using a device, you must download the plash player app "puffin academy." The reading discovery app you see in the app store is not fully developed yet. Once you download puffin, search "reading horizons" and it is the first app that pops up! What's to come!
L- Blends
We are also extending our learning beyond these consonant, vowel, consonant words to learning about blends. Blends are two consonants together that have sounds that are arced together to make a sound. There are 6 L-Blends that we learned this week that can also be used in your decoding activities at home.
