We are cruising along with our book bags and exploring what it means to read more challenging books! Challenging books have more lines, new sight words, longer words, and surprise endings that don't follow the pattern. To help us come up with a plan to read all of our challenging books, we have introduced a "reading mat." This reading mat is in our book bag and we us sit every time we read. We take out all of our books and organize them from hardest to easiest. We read the easiest book first and work our way down to the hardest! Once we have read the whole stack we go back and re-read the stack starting at the hardest book! |
We have also been talking a lot about what to do when you come to a word you don't know. We went through 4 possible steps to use in our books. We learned that sometimes we only have to do the first step and we have solved the puzzle, but other times we might have to use all 4! In class, we used the word "leaf" as an example. A picture of falling leaves helped us identify the word, we thought to ourselves "do these sounds together sound like a real word," we asked ourself "does this work make sense in this sentence and in this book," and last we re-checked all the letters to sound it out again! We have a new bookmark in our book bag to help remind us of what strategy we want to practice! We have all circled one that we really want to set asa goal for ourselves. |
